What is Royal Jelly?
What is Royal Jelly?
Royal jelly is a secretion produced by worker bees in their mandibular and pharyngeal glands to feed the larvae developing in the honeycomb cells. This secretion, known as royal jelly, is gelatinous, cream-colored, with a sour taste, and possesses a throat-burning acidic property. According to research on the chemical composition of royal jelly, it contains water, proteins, fats, sugars, and other unidentified substances at a rate of 2-3%. Additionally, royal jelly contains vitamins C, D, E, H, B complex vitamins, 17 different amino acids, and some trace elements. The reason for the production of royal jelly by bees is to feed the larvae that will become queen bees. Initially, all larvae are fed with royal jelly. However, the feeding of worker bee larvae with royal jelly is stopped on the 3rd day, while the larvae destined to become queen bees are continuously fed royal jelly. As a result, while a normal worker bee can live for 40-45 days, queen bees fed with royal jelly can live for about 4-5 years. Queen bees are about 2-3 times larger than worker bees, and throughout their lifespan, they lay around 3000 eggs per day, which is twice their own weight.
For these reasons, research on the effects of royal jelly on humans continues with great seriousness.
